Vintage Crown of Thorns Tramp Art Box from Sweden. A wonderful crown of thorns tramp art box. Each interlocking piece must be cut with precision. The artist did not use glue or nails to put this box together and it is just amazing in person! Very sculptural. Amazing in person.
Tramp art's defining characteristics include the use of cheaper available woods such as that from cigar boxes, shipping crates and scrap wood that were then notched, layered, and/or whittled into picture frames, elaborate boxes and furnitures.
This charming handicraft flourished in the second half of the 19th century in Europe and America until it became a lost art around the same time as the Great Depression. These humble pieces, that have come to be regarded as their own art form, were often made by working class men, women and sometimes even children and have become highly collectable.
